This is quite sad, but what I often do is time myself on how long it will take me to pitch my tent. When you're doing it every night for three weeks, like I have had to, you try to find a way to make things more fun and entertaining. I tried to beat my personal best each time. Also, dry shampoo is an absolute must for me.

I remember one time on a five-hour hike to the Matterhorn, it started to get dark. We had kind of run out of things to talk about, so we listened to an audio book! That kept us going and time ran a little bit faster. I always bring ziplock bags because when it's raining, you can quickly put your equipment in them to keep them safe from the wet.

A good sharp knife is a must. I'd take a smallish, lightweight knife, that I'd actually use in the kitchen, and a whetstone. I also always have at least two means of lighting a fire. So a flint and steel and one or two lighters.
